Sep 13 10 JOHNNY X actor Kevin McCarthy, 96, dies in Mass.
Kevin McCarthy, the prolific stage and screen actor best known for his starring role as the panicked doctor who tried to warn the world about the alien "pod people" who were taking over in the 1956 science-fiction suspense classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers, has died. He was 96.
McCarthy's career spanned more than 70 years and included an Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe award for 1951's Death of a Salesman film. He recently completed filming The Ghastly Love of Johnny X, which would make it his final feature film appearance.
JOHNNY X director Paul Bunnell spoke with Kevin on the phone two weeks prior to his death. He seemed happy and upbeat, according to Bunnell, and was enjoying the company of family and friends at his Cape Cod home.
JOHNNY X associate producer Ramzi Abed remembers McCarthy fondly:
"So eerie and beautiful that his role in your film is so fitting and such an homage to what he did before. I feel blessed to have met him thanks to you, and to have shared his energy watching him work. Thanks again, and rest in peace, Kevin. You are a true legend and hero to the world of cinema."
McCarthy died of natural causes at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Mass., according to his daughter Lillah.
It was a magical experience shooting on the last of Kodak's now discontinued 35mm (Plus-X) black-and-white film stock.
Special Thanks to Panavision for providing an amazing camera package which included a 30-foot Technocrane.
And a VERY special thanks to my wonderful Cast and Crew for making this production a unique and memorable experience.
—Paul Bunnell
Jun 16 10 KATE MABERLY plays comedic role in JOHNNY X!
British born actress Kate Maberly has officially joined the cast of Johnny X to play "Dandi Conners" -- a bubbly young fan who gets mixed up with her idol, the legendary rocker "Mickey O'Flynn" (The Man with the Grin), played by Creed Bratton.
Kate's breakthrough role came in 1993 when she starred as "Mary Lennox" in the feature film The Secret Garden. This internationally acclaimed performance paved the way for several subsequent leading roles, including "Wendy Darling" in the 2004 film Finding Neverland with Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet. In 2007 she appeared in two feature films, the Australian/UK thriller Like Minds, and the British teen comedy Popcorn.
Jun 05 10 PAUL WILLIAMS cast as quirky Talk Show Host in JOHNNY X!
Academy Award/Grammy/Golden Globe Winner Paul Williams has joined the cast of Johnny X to play the role of "Cousin Quilty", a bohemian cosmopolitan and noted talk show host with a splashy personality.
Although most people came to know the witty Mr. Williams as one of Johnny Carson's recurring favorites on The Tonight Show or as an actor in dozens of films, television comedies and dramas, it is his musical legacy that continues to inspire.
Film roles include playing "Gunther Fry" in Tony Richardson's 1965 dark-comedy The Loved One; "Virgil" in Battle for the Planet of the Apes; and most notably as "Swan" in Brian De Palma's 1974 cult classic Phantom of the Paradise, in which he not only starred, but wrote the Oscar nominated song score. With such an amazing body of work, Williams predicts he'll be remembered for playing "Little Enos" in the Smokey and the Bandit trilogy and for his lyrics to The Love Boat theme. Needless to say, we are thrilled to have Paul on board!
May 20 10 CREED BRATTON cast as rock crooner in JOHNNY X!
Multi-talented actor/musician Creed Bratton has officially joined the cast of Johnny X to play the role of a degenerate rock 'n' roll crooner who is brought back to life for a bizarre comeback concert!
Creed became a professional musician during his high school and college years and went on to become a founding member of The Grass Roots. Iconic hit songs such as "Midnight Confessions" cemented their standing as major contributors to the rock music scene. Bratton played with the group on their first four albums.
Currently, Creed is a regular cast member (playing a fictional version of himself) on NBC's Emmy and SAG award winning The Office.
"Mickey O'Flynn" (the Man with the Grin) is a key character in Johnny X and is sure to delight Creed's fans.
